Its quite a challenge reproducing paintings satisfactorily. The printer has to use all his ingenuity and skill to capture tones and subtleties exactly and deliver the richness of hue that the artist achieved with a palette of oils or water-colours. Silkkipaino Makisalo Oy, a Finnish screen printing company, however, has made this interesting field one of their specialisations.
Back in the 1960s, Pentti Makisalo, founder and president of the company, began working with three of the countrys most talented graphic artists - Raimo Kanerva, Kimmo Kaivanto and Gunnar Pohjola. Together they developed and refined the screen printing process to produce prints with meticulous accuracy, despite the fact that the original works contained anything from 9 to 20 different colours.
From the beginning, Pentti Makisalo appreciated that the task called for state of the art screen printing machinery. He needed a system which could run out proofs quickly and economically, allowed colours to be tweaked and at the same time offered reproducibility, reliability and ease of use. Only one manufacturer could meet this brief - Svecia.
